Lance, an American woodcarver, and Kim, a college art major, combined their talents in 1986 to hand carve old world St. Nicholases. Lance uses only knives and chisels to create his carvings. Kim hand-paints her husband's carvings, choosing just the right colors to compliment the wood tones. A popular choice for our customers is Lance's Handcarved Nativity within a stable, carved from basswood.
We carry a wide variety of nativity ornaments in different media, all handcrafted by American Artists. The one shown here is made from laser-cut maple wood that's assembled and glued by hand, creating a beautiful 3D design.
Our free standing Nativities are handpainted, like the ceramic one shown here by Judi, a self-taught Maine artist. Judi began painting in 1962. Every week she got together with friends, and painted ceramics. Gradually, she spent more time painting and enjoying it. In 1980, she quit her day job, and started her own business, selling her work and teaching art classes.

The remnants of Hurricane Noel blew down much of our fall leaves, some trees and tree limbs, and caused brief power outages. Overall, it did minimal damage, compared to what was forecast.
After a busy summer and fall season, Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island are much quieter in November and December. Many shops, restaurants, and hotels have closed while others, like the Christmas SpiritŪ Shop, stay open for the Christmas season. Tourists will find plenty to do and lots to eat as they visit our beautiful area this time of year.
Bar Harbor will put up street decorations soon, and welcome Santa next month with festivities for children, young and old. We can expect our first snowfall anytime this month, but sometimes it doesn't snow before Christmas. That's not a problem for Santa because he often comes here by boat.
