Last week’s storms dumped almost 2 feet of snow onto Mount Desert Island, followed by bright sunny days in the thirties, perfect for outdoor activities in Acadia National Park. The forty-five miles of carriage roads and the forty-one miles of unplowed park roads in Acadia become ideal paths this time of year for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Acadia’s one of the few places in the country where you can enjoy both the seaside snow, and a scenic view of the ocean, all at the same time. The brisk air that blows in from the ocean actually moderates the air temperature, so the winter cold is not as extreme as that found further inland. Don’t worry about bringing equipment, as skiing and snowshoeing rentals are available in Bar Harbor at Cadillac Mountain Sports on Cottage Street.

After playing in the snow, many visitors return to their cozy Inn or B & B, and warm themselves by the fireplace, while sipping a hot drink. Then it’s out to eat some local fare.
