ISLAND UPDATE
Things are pretty quiet this time of year. There are not as many visitors; some shops are closed for the winter. The weather in Maine this month has been pretty quiet, too. Our neighbors along the mid-Atlantic coast have been really taking a beating! We’re sorry about that for 2 reasons: 1.) they are not used to having several FEET of snow ALL AT ONCE and 2.) The skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers in Maine are really crying the NO SNOW blues.	Sand Angels and Sand Castles - Sand Beach
Snowmobile Speed Limit Signs - Eagle Lake	The ski resorts can make snow, although it has been fairly mild; but the snowmobilers are stopped dead in their tracks, so to speak, with nothing to ride on but dirt. On the opening day of the Winter Olympics, a newscaster reported that 49 of our 50 states had measurable snowfall; only Hawaii escaped! As you can see, our snowfall has been unremarkable.
This quiet time of year is great for recharging our physical and mental batteries. It is also the time when we make improvements to our towns and businesses. The weather has been ideal for that, since many of the changes are happening outside: new roofs on buildings, new docks on the waterfront and one VERY exciting addition to our town...BRAND NEW RESTROOM FACILITIES! This year, when our customers ask the #1 Question, "Where are the nearest restrooms?", we don’t have to send them "Up the hill to the Police station" or "Down the hill to the dock." We can say "Right around the corner!" They are being constructed right at the top of the park, overlooking the water in Bar Harbor! Samantha's Search for Treasures	I have to admit, Samantha is very happy that the snow pack is down! She was getting weary of the snow tunnels she had to follow into the woods morning, noon and night. In January, she even missed out on some of her daily walks that she loves so much. Her walks are much more interesting now since the melting snow has uncovered a lot of buried treasure along the way...and believe me she stops to smell EVERYTHING! But by far the best part of this mild weather for her is that she has her favorite field back. She patrols it faithfully every day...sometimes several times a day. Oh, the wonderful smells! So, we’ve teamed up with our artists to offer quantity discounts that encourage our customers to place their orders early.
